Manchester United are missing out on an easy first INEOS summer transfer

In the height of the Glazer-run days at Manchester United, the club used to make lots of mistakes in the transfer window.

The Jadon Sancho transfer pursuit is perhaps the most obvious, considering what transpired after it. United thought they'd done due diligence on a player who simply didn't fit in on or off the pitch at Old Trafford. Others like signing Alexis Sanchez on eye-watering wages, splurging more than £80m on Antony and the infamous Paul Pogba 'Pogback' deal all spring to mind.

It's a new era now and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has promised things will be different at the club. For a start, United have a whole set of new executives in the boardroom, a new technical director in Jason Wilcox and, you'd suspect, this means a fresh approach to the transfer window.

This summer's window could hardly be more important. After finishing the Premier League season languishing in eighth position – two places worse off than in 2019 and 2022, United's past two 'reset' windows – it's time to clear the dead-wood and start afresh.

Of course, United cannot sell everyone and even clearing the decks enough to feel the squad has been sufficiently rejuvenated is a risk in the current financial climate. Ralf Rangnick famously said more than two years ago that United needed to sign "eight to 10 players" but such a prospect isn't feasible in the world of Financial Fair Play.

United simply wouldn't be able to sign enough new recruits to replace those sold, all the while adhering to the Premier League's strict Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
