Erik ten Hag 'makes Manchester United contract demand' after 'key call' saved his job

Manchester United have finally concluded their season review and have made their decision on Erik ten Hag's future at the club.

Despite shopping around for potential replacements, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have decided to stick by their manager heading into the new campaign. It is understood Ten Hag was getting restless because of the lack of progress in deciding his future, but at least knows he will be in the dugout on the opening day of next season.

According to The Times, Ten Hag is not merely pushing for a contract for himself but also for his coach Benni McCarthy. The South African has been working with the club's strikers but his deal at Carrington expires at the end of June.

MEN Sport says: "Since he arrived at the club, McCarthy has become a popular figure among the United squad. Clips from training sessions at Carrington prove the former Blackburn Rovers man is appreciated by his colleagues. Ten Hag will likely see this negotiation with INEOS as a test. It is unclear at this stage how sold Ratcliffe is on keeping Ten Hag for the long term, but if a new deal can be agreed for McCarthy it will serve as evidence that Ten Hag is not just a sitting duck waiting to be sacked at the first sign of trouble next season."
