Manchester United already know their next No.7 after Cristiano Ronaldo

There is an inevitability to Cristiano Ronaldo. In the last few weeks, he has been a hindrance to the Manchester United side with his wastefulness in front of goal and a clear lack of confidence.

Yet, when at his best, he is still the most lethal finisher in the history of the men's game. After weeks of missed chances, everything clicked for him on Saturday evening, with yet another performance that defied logic. For 90 minutes, at least, Ronaldo was anything but the problem.

But inevitability works in more ways than one. The 37-year-old is really starting to show his age and he is still not the long-term solution for a side that is still a number of years away from challenging for the Premier League title again. They might already have that solution, though.

While the weekend win over Tottenham was dominated by the brilliance of hat-trick hero Ronaldo, United's victory was as much about the continued excellence of Jadon Sancho and his emergence as the most consistent performer at the club.

It was always ridiculous to write Sancho off after his slow start to the season, partly down to the fact that he wasn't being viewed as an overseas arrival due to his nationality. Instead, the 21-year-old needed time to adapt to the Premier League and the intense physical demands put on him before he could be fairly judged. He is now reaping the rewards.

Another key component of his recent transformation has been the confidence instilled in him by interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who put his trust in the England international from the second he arrived at Old Trafford.
