Manchester chippy named second best in the UK

A Manchester chip shop has been named the second best in the whole of the UK. Hip Hop Chip Shop, in Ancoats, came in just behind The Mayfair Chippy in London.

Also featured on the list is Tony’s Chippy, around the corner in Miles Platting, which comes in at number seven. Betting company Betway put the stats together, collecting data based on Google ratings, Instagram hashtags and reviews on TripAdvisor.

The Hip Hop Chip Shop has been running since 2012, launching from a mobile van fashioned to look like a giant tape deck. It made its name as a pop-up, appearing at food markets and events around the north, with the team behind its love of hip hop almost as important as the food.

As well as traditional, but perfectly executed fish and triple cooked chips, they also do a mean chicken burger, fried halloumi fingers and battered vegan fish steaks too. After years on the road, they opened their first bricks and mortar restaurant in Ancoats in 2018, with the van currently in residence at the Carlton Club in Whalley Range.

Fellow top tenner Tony’s, meanwhile, has been in business for more than 30 years, and is often named among the best in the city.
