Manchester-based surgeon explains six advantages for undergoing cosmetic surgery in the UK

As cosmetic procedures abroad are rising due to reduced costs, so has the number of complications. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has revealed in a recent study that there has been a 44% rise in complications from patients undergoing cosmetic surgery abroad.

We spoke with a Manchester based cosmetic surgeon who practices at the highly-rated Manchester Private Hospital to find out the advantages of remaining the UK for cosmetic procedures, and what regulations are in place here to reduce the risk of complications. He also shared his advice to patients who are planning on going through with surgery in both the UK and abroad.

Cosmetic surgery is invasive, is not risk-free or a solution to personal problems and is not to be performed on anyone under 18 years old. Always seek independent medical advice and give the procedure careful consideration before going ahead.

Dr Anuj Purbey, 47, who graduated in India in 2001 and came to the UK to work in 2003, has worked through various specialities in the UK and had gradually developed a keen interest in aesthetic medicine. Now he specialises in body sculpting.

He said: “You've got to remember that every procedure comes with risk, and it's very important that we do have very good post operative care and support, to get adequate results in the recovery process.

“It is easy to get lured into getting services abroad at a much cheaper price, but remember what you are putting yourself into. At the end of the day it is your life. You have to ask this question: is it worth saving a few hundred pounds, or a couple of thousand pounds, and risking your safety. Because in the UK we definitely maintain very good standards of care - it's well known.”
