Sky Sports News understands Manchester United have prioritised signing a central midfielder this summer as the club remain in talks with Barcelona to sign Frenkie de Jong.
There has been no official offer yet for the Netherlands international from United with the clubs still apart in their valuations of the player, but there is a growing belief from all parties a deal can be done.
United, however, will not pay silly money and will focus on other targets if they cannot negotiate a reasonable price with the Spanish club.
De Jong is a player United manager Erik ten Hag knows well and rates highly having managed him at Ajax.
When De Jong was asked about United's interest in him after the Netherlands beat Wales 3-2 in Rotterdam on Tuesday night, the 25-year-old said: "You're always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player.
"I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news."

United have made initial enquiries to Ajax about winger Antony, who is also well-known by United boss Erik ten Hag having been a regular in his Ajax team over the past two seasons.
The 22-year-old is one of a number of players United have been looking at - another was Liverpool-bound Darwin Nunez, but the Uruguay international was not a top priority target, while United were not interested in doing a deal at the prices being quoted.
