Jose Mourinho’s 2018 rant about Manchester United’s lack of success in Europe during the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era went viral after the Red Devils’ were knocked out of the 2021-22 Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Ralf Rangnick’s side had an excellent opportunity to advance to the quarter-finals after salvaging a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano last month.

But despite a positive start at Old Trafford, United struggled in the second half after conceding a Renan Lodi goal on the stroke of half-time.

The Red Devils mustered one shot after the interval and Atletico deservedly sealed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals at their expense.

United’s increasingly frustrated supporters, who enjoyed so much success during Ferguson’s glittering 26-year reign, are left wondering where the club goes from here.

The club’s decline since Ferguson and David Gill left Old Trafford in the summer of 2013 has been even more dramatic than most people anticipated it would be.

Even Mourinho, one of the most revered managers in football history, struggled at Old Trafford – though he did win both the League Cup and Europa League during his debut season with the Red Devils.

After winning the Europa League in 2017, Mourinho had a crack at Champions League football with Man Utd but was unable to drag the club past the Round of 16 following a hugely disappointing 2-1 defeat to Sevilla at Old Trafford.
