Man Utd board respond to Sir Alex Ferguson recommending Carlo Ancelotti

Manchester United’s hierarchy have decided against a move for Carlo Ancelotti despite Sir Alex Ferguson’s recommendation, according to reports.

United have already begun their search for Ralf Rangnick’s successor with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Tag as the two frontrunners to land the role this summer.

Earlier this month, reports claimed that Ferguson is an admirer of Pochettino but recommended Ancelotti as a short-term option to United’s board if the Paris Saint-Germain manager was unavailable at the end of the season.

However, ESPN report that Ancelotti is now among the candidates considered by United’s hierarchy as either ‘unsuitable or unattainable’ alongside Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto Mancini, who was also linked with a surprise move to Old Trafford.

The report has also played down United’s chances of luring Thomas Tuchel from Chelsea this summer, despite uncertainty surrounding the west London club due to their takeover.

Ten Hag is understood to have been interviewed by United this week but the Ajax manager faces strong competition from Pochettino, Spain head coach Luis Enrique and Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui.

Pochettino, meanwhile, is under pressure to keep his job at Paris Saint-Germain for the remainder of the season following their Champions League exit to Real Madrid earlier this month.

PSG remain on course to win Ligue 1 by a considerable margin but they delivered another woeful performance in their 3-0 defeat to Monaco last weekend.

Meanwhile, Rangnick is tasked with guiding United to a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League after they were eliminated from the Champions League by Atletico Madrid last week.
