‘Man Utd are in a real fight’ – Scholes speaks on battle for top four

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes believes his former side are “more than capable” of finishing in the top four this season.

Ahead of this campaign, Man Utd signed Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho. There were calls for United to challenge for the title but they have fallen short of this.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked earlier this season and he was replaced by Ralf Rangnick in December.

Is this the most ‘shocking’ Man United manager candidate yet?

The German has won six of his twelve games in charge so far. In midweek they dropped points as they drew 1-1 against Burnley.

Man Utd host Southampton on Saturday afternoon. Ahead of this game, they sit fifth in the Premier League table.

They are a point behind fourth-placed West Ham. Arsenal and Tottenham are hot on their heels as they have games in hand.

Scholes said before their game versus Southampton that United’s performances have been “okay” of late:

“When you looked at the start of the season you were expecting this group of players to be challenging for the league,” Scholes said (via Manchester Evening News).

“Now, for one reason or another, that hasn’t quite happened.

“They’ve found themselves in a real fight to finish fourth. I think they’re more than capable of it.

“I think performances of the last two or three weeks have given you a little more encouragement – okay, they haven’t scored the goals but performance-wise they’ve been okay and they’ll be looking for a strong last 14, 15 games.”
