Man Utd and Lingard’s greed laid bare as Newcastle end talks

Jesse Lingard would have been a brilliant signing for Newcastle United, as he impressed in last season’s loan move at West Ham United and would be available on a free transfer this summer, but Luke Edwards of the Telegraph says Newcastle have ended talks after being dismayed by unreasonable requests.

Newcastle were linked with Jesse Lingard in October 2021 when he was fighting for his place at Manchester United. They tried to sign the 29-year-old on loan in January 2022 but pulled out after being told to pay a £16m loan fee. And the Magpies hoped to sign Lingard on a free transfer this summer, but the England international requested £150k-per-week – nearly double the salary of any Newcastle player.

The 29-year-old has scored just two goals with one assist in 22 games this season, amassing 548 minutes of football. He’s out of contract in June, so why were United asking for a lofty loan fee? And why is Lingard pricing himself out of a move to Newcastle given how well he did at West Ham?
