Man Utd: £25m star could replace Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has set his sights on signing Cody Gakpo as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo and the Dutchman is confident the PSV Eindhoven star would be a success at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils recorded their second consecutive win thanks to overcoming Southampton on Saturday, but ten Hag could sanction signings and departures ahead of Thursday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have submitted a £25million take-it-or-leave-it bid for PSV star Gakpo.

The report suggests ten Hag, who took over as the Red Devils’ chief during the summer, has given the green light to strike a deal for the 23-year-old.

However, it is understood that PSV value Gakpo at £35million and are unwilling to sanction his departure unless their demands are met.

With the wide-man’s contract still having three years remaining, the Eredivisie giants are in a strong negotiating position.

Manchester United are not Gakpo’s only suitors, as journalist Simon Phillips has told GIVEMESPORT that Everton could head to the negotiating table if Anthony Gordon seals his switch to Chelsea.

Jones believes Manchester United would be left with a lack of options if Ronaldo’s wish to leave the club is granted.

As a result, the journalist understands that ten Hag has set his sights on landing Gakpo as a replacement ahead of the deadline.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “If Ronaldo did leave, United would obviously still be short in attack in terms of numbers and quality.

“That’s where they would look to get Gakpo into. He has always been a back-up option.

“Ten Hag has seen enough of him in the past to believe that he would work for him.”
