Man United told they could end up with two players Pep Guardiola would love

Manchester United have been told by two former players that they could end up with a pairing of Angel Gomes and Kobbie Mainoo - a duo that Man City boss Pep Guardiola would love to have.

In a move now that could strike fear into the City boss, Erik ten Hag's side have been linked with a swoop for Gomes. The 22-year-old left United in 2020 to join Ligue 1 outfit Lille and has shone since his move, even earning his first senior England caps during the recent international break.

While United are believed to be looking to secure the youngster's services once again, club legend Nicky Butt believes the former Red Devil is that promising that he could walk straight into Guardiola's side. Another player City would be thrilled to have on their books, according to Gary Neville, is Mainoo.

The idea of uniting two of Europe's most promising young midfielders will be an alluring prospect for Ten Hag. However, he could have a job on his hands with Gomes also being linked with a host of clubs thanks to his meteoric rise, with City and rivals Liverpool also rumoured to be in for the young star.

Butt now believes Gomes is tailor-made for Europe's elite and will have the choice of any clubs he wishes to join. The 49-year-old believes the starlet will be looking at the likes of Real Madrid, but conceded he could also feature in Pep Guardiola's first XI "tomorrow".

“I think he can do better than some of the teams that will be in for him in the Premier League,” Butt told the PA news agency. "The Spanish league is written all over for Angel. He could play in the Premier League
