Man United sub strikes to draw at Atletico

Teenage substitute Anthony Elanga scored the equaliser for Manchester United just minutes after his introduction to rescue a 1-1 draw at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.

Elanga calmly slotted past home goalkeeper Jan Oblak with 10 minutes remaining to earn United a draw they scarcely deserved from an extremely limited performance.

Atletico needed only seven minutes to open the scoring through Joao Felix's header but they could not find a second goal and were punished by the 19-year-old Swede Elanga just five minutes after he came off the bench.

Atletico were in control during most of the match and twice had efforts hit the crossbar, including an 86th-minute shot by substitute Antoine Griezmann.

United star Cristiano Ronaldo, who several times ended Atletico's title hopes in the Champions League when he was with cross-town rivals Real Madrid, struggled throughout the match and was visibly frustrated.

Isolated up front, he was booed by the Atletico fans nearly every time he touched the ball at the Wanda Metropolitano.

United, fourth in the Premier League, will now be slight favourites to progress at the expense of Atletico -- a disappointing fifth in La Liga in defence of their title -- in the March 15 return leg.

There will also be everything to play for in Amsterdam that night when Ajax and Benfica resume after a 2-2 draw in Lisbon, in which Sebastian Haller scored at both ends.

The prolific Ivory Coast striker now has 11 goals for Ajax in his first seven Champions League matches, the highest tally ever by a debutant in Europe's top club competition.
