Man United, Man City: Which WSL side will book a Champions League spot?

As Chelsea and Arsenal continue to jostle for this year’s Women’s Super League title, there remains one Champions League place left to fill for next season. 

Right now, there are three teams in contention for this coveted European spot –– Man United, Man City and Tottenham Hotspur. 

While it’s United who narrowly lead the way on 32 points from 17 games, City could move on to the same number of points, should they win their game in hand. Tottenham similarly have a game in hand and could reach 31 points with a victory. 

Such is the narrow margin between these three teams, the Champions League race is likely to go right down to the wire and right now, it’s exceptionally difficult to call. 

With that in mind, we’ve analysed the three sides and have offered our say on how the league table will end up: 

If United don’t manage to hold on to third place, they can only have themselves to blame. 

While Marc Skinner’s side has already surpassed many people’s expectations this season, they’ve had a tendency to throw away crucial points late on in matches. 

Against league leaders Arsenal, they conceded in the 79th minute. Against City, Caroline Weir scored a screamer in the 81st. And in Wednesday’s match against West Ham, a 93rd-minute equaliser from Grace Fisk prevented the Red Devils from going five points clear of their Manchester rivals. 

United do have four winnable games coming up, but they face a trip away to Kingsmeadow on the final day of the season against Chelsea. With this in mind, picking up maximum points from now until then is almost a necessity.
