Man United great Gary Neville makes Sir Alex Ferguson point after Newcastle vs Arsenal VAR controversy

Gary Neville believes Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United would not have sent an open letter to the Premier League after a refereeing error like Arsenal have done this weekend.

VAR was the major talking point on Saturday when Mikel Arteta called officiating a 'disgrace' after the officials failed to rule out Anthony Gordon's winner for Newcastle against Arsenal. Following their manager's strong comments in his post-match press conference, the Gunners opted to support their boss on Sunday afternoon.

In a club statement, they wrote: "Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening. We’d also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James’ Park.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better. PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies.

"We support the ongoing efforts of Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands." Neville was on co-commentary duty in the North East last night and felt the officials made the correct decision not; to rule the ball had gone out, to award a free kick for a foul or give offside against Gordon.
