Man United chiefs informed of 'transfer failure of the decade' with one star singled out

Louis Saha has suggested that Manchester United's failure to sign Erling Haaland is one of the club's most significant transfer mistakes in recent years.

The Manchester City star has emerged as one of the world's leading goalscorers, initially making his name at Molde and Red Bull Salzburg before gaining widespread recognition at Borussia Dortmund. He then moved to City in 2022 for an initial fee of £51million.

Haaland has maintained his prolific scoring record at the Etihad, netting 114 goals in just 130 appearances. He has also claimed the Premier League's Golden Boot award for the past two seasons, helping City dominate both domestically and internationally with two top-flight titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup since his arrival.

Earlier this month, Haaland committed his future to the reigning champions by signing a staggering nine-and-a-half-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2034. However, before his move to Dortmund in 2020, there was a possibility that Haaland could have joined United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who managed Haaland at Molde, revealed on the Stick To Football podcast that he had informed his former club about the striker's availability back in 2018.

Despite having inside knowledge, Manchester United chose not to trigger the £16.7million (€20m) release clause for the Norwegian. The club's transfer history is littered with high-profile acquisitions like Alexis Sanchez, Antony, Radamel Falcao, and Donny van de Beek, whose stints at Old Trafford are generally perceived as disappointments.
