Man United can't repeat Declan Rice mistake with their next Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes
Manchester United are being linked with a move for Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton as their midfield faces another potential revamp.
Several midfielders in Ruben Amorim's team face an uncertain future at Old Trafford beyond the summer. Christian Eriksen will depart M16, Casemiro is not getting any younger and has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the past, while Kobbie Mainoo's homegrown status puts his future at United in question due to PSR restraints at the club.
United's midfield struggles have been well-documented over the past few seasons. The gaps in that area were routinely mocked under Amorim's predecessor, Erik ten Hag, as opposition attackers waltzed through his team at will. While those problems have not been as noticeable under Amorim, the position still remains problematic and contributes to their struggles under the Portuguese.
It's why missing out on Declan Rice to Arsenal was so damaging, even if the Gunners were a more attractive prospect. The England star opted to join Mikel Arteta's side from West Ham in July 2023 despite interest from United.
And it's also why a move for Palace's Wharton could be so important for a club which has so badly lost its way - remarkably even more so since the arrival of Ineos. United have always had some of the best English midfielders, from Paul Scholes to Michael Carrick and the early signs with Wharton should pique interest.
The 21-year-old has risen to prominence since his move to Selhurst Park from Blackburn Rovers last year. His stellar performances earned him a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024.
Wharton's progress this season was slightly impeded due to groin surgery he underwent in November. He made his comeback on the field in
