Man suspected of killing two in Brussels is shot dead by police

A man suspected of killing two Swedish nationals in Brussels has been shot dead by police, Belgium's interior minister has announced. Annelies Verlinden also confirmed that a weapon had been recovered from the scene.

It follows the killing of two Swedes in the Belgian capital last night (October 16), ahead of a football match between the two nations at the King Baudouin Stadium, which was later abandoned. Mr Verlinden told VRT radio this morning: “We have the good news that we found the individual."

Amateur videos posted on social media of Monday’s attack showed a man wearing an orange fluorescent vest pull up on a scooter, take out a large weapon and open fire on passers by before chasing them into a building to gun them down. Authorities had been searching for a 45-year-old suspected Tunisian extremist who was known to police and was living in Belgium illegally.

Belgium's Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, described the shootings as 'terrorism' after the attack took place. He posted on X (formerly Twitter): “I have just offered my sincere condolences to @SwedishPM following tonight’s harrowing attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels.

"As close partners the fight against terrorism is a joint one." Belgian authorities raised the terror alert to its highest level in Brussels and the second-highest level across the rest of the country following the attack.
