Man in critical condition after major incident in city centre with huge cordon still in place

A man is in a critical condition after a major incident in Manchester city centre on Wednesday evening (August 16) with a huge cordon still in place.

Emergency services descended on Dale Street, near to Piccadilly train station, at around 6.30pm where two men were left seriously injured in a double stabbing around commuters.

Horrified witnesses described seeing 'blood in the road' after the violent attack as a huge cordon was put in place. Two victims, aged in their 20s and 30s, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries from the scene before forensics arrived.

Throughout Thursday (August 17) the area remained cordoned off, including on a towpath beside the Rochdale Canal, with evidence markers left beside debris on the ground. Specialist underwater search teams were also spotted at the canal, understood to have been part of the search for evidence.

The investigation is now being led by the Major Incident Team within Greater Manchester Police. One of the victims remains in a critical and life-threatening condition in hospital and the other has suffered serious injuries but is in a stable condition, police said.

The scene is expected to remain in place for some time, with detectives continuing to 'collect evidence' to 'piece together a full and comprehensive timeline of events.'

Three males were arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of section 18 assault. A 21-year-old man remains in custody and the other two males have been released without charge.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes of GMP’s Serious Crime Division, said: “One of the men continues to fight for his life in hospital, we owe it to both men who have suffered injuries
