A man is fighting for his life and a woman was injured after a BMW mounted the kerb and smashed into a wall outside a house in Salford.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the major smash on Leigh Road in Worsley at around 3.30am on Sunday (January 19). A brick wall near the gated entrance to a property was completely destroyed, with bricks and rubble scattered across the pavement and road.

Greater Manchester Police said a man in his 30s suffered serious and life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to hospital from the scene, with a woman, in her 40s, also injured,

A neighbour who lives next-door to the wall that was hit said he witnessed the car's headlights facing towards his house before it hit the wall. The road was closed off by emergency services for a number of hours.

"It hit a kerb and then the next thing I saw it was sideways," he said. "It had hit a kerb further down then by the time it reached this bit of the road, it was sideways.

"Then it hit the wall, it bounced off and ended upside down on the other side of the road. There was everything here, police, ambulance, everything. All from around 3am this morning."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 3.30am, a BMW is believed to have clipped a kerb before mounting the pavement, while driving down Leigh Road in Worsley.
