Man City vs Liverpool Premier League title play-off is now even more realistic

The Premier League title race pendulum swung Manchester City’s way at the weekend after they moved three points clear of Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could only draw at home to Tottenham on Saturday evening as City made them pay with a 5-0 victory over Newcastle.

Those results put City three points clear and are now four goals superior in terms of goal difference.

Title race over?

It will be if City win their remaining three matches.

But we all want a dramatic title race, don’t we?

And nothing would be more dramatic than a title play-off between Man City and Liverpool in a 39th game.

Before the weekend’s result, we explained how it could happen.

But if you thought the results mean a play-off can no longer occur, you’re very much mistaken.

In fact, it’s even more realistic with just six matches left to play.

We’ve worked out the most likely results needed for Liverpool and Man City to finish on the same points, the same goal difference and the same goals scored – and of course the same head-to-head record after two 2-2 draws.

The Premier League handbook states: “If two clubs cannot be separated by operation of Rule C.17.1 and C.17.2, a play-off on a neutral ground, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board”.
