Man City told why Erling Haaland won't be a Premier League game changer

Manchester City sealed one of the most exciting transfers in recent football history last month, when they activated the £51m release clause in Erling Haaland's Borussia Dortmund contract.

The deal brought an end to City's long hunt for an elite striker, which had seen Pep Guardiola's side try and fail to sign Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo over the past two years.

This time the Blues made sure to get their man, beating out Real Madrid to bring the 22-year-old to the Etihad Stadium. However, according to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, Haaland will not prove to be a game changer for City in the Premier League.

"I still think City are favourites, but I don’t think Haaland is a game changer for them in terms of winning the league," Carragher said on TalkSport.

"They win the league now and they already get 95 to 100 points – are they going to get 110?! There are only so many points you can win in a season.

"I think Haaland is almost the icing on the cake for the Champions League. If he’s playing away in Madrid, they don’t lose that game. I think that’s the difference he’ll make.

Carragher believes that compared to Liverpool's signings in 2019, Haaland won't make much of a difference to City's title bid.

"I think when you look at what Liverpool did to City and get to that level of 90-plus points, they bought Allison and van Dijk. They were game changers.

"They took Liverpool from a team who were getting 75 points, to a team looking to get 95 points. I think City are already at that level, so I don’t think it’s going to be like that for Haaland.
