Man City told Champions League fate amid UEFA decision

Manchester City and sister club Girona will be able to face off in next season's Champions League following a decision by UEFA - although rule changes might impact multi-club ownership moving forward.

City lifted the Premier League title for the fourth successive season last month and will once again be among the favourites to lift the biggest prize in European football. They claimed the title in 2023 but saw their defence end in a quarter-final exit to eventual winners Real Madrid.

Spanish side Girona, meanwhile, will make their debut in the Champions League after an outstanding season saw them finish third in La Liga. Both clubs are owned by City Football Group but the duo will be permitted to play alongside each other in the 2024-25 edition.

UEFA regulations stipulate that clubs owned by the same entity cannot compete in the same European competition. Typically, the team that ranks lower in their respective league would be demoted to the Europa League, which in this case would be Girona.

But as reported by The Times, City and Girona will not be impacted. UEFA's Club Financial Control Board is set to deliver a verdict on multi-club ownership issues on Monday, reports the Mirror. CFCB is said to have scrutinised the CFG links because of the clubs' transfer dealings this season, though have cleared both teams to play.

The situation also impacts Manchester United and Nice, who are both in next season's Europa League. It is anticipated that the CFCB will approve United's participation alongside Nice, subject to certain conditions. They
