Man City star who outshone Southampton man gets all the plaudits after draw

Manchester City star Aymeric Laporte has been praised for his performance during the Blues' 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

The 27-year-old notched his third goal of the season, as Pep Guardiola's side were held by the Saints for the second time this season, with City enjoying a nine-point cushion at the top of the Premier League table.

More often than not partnering Ruben Dias in defence, Laporte has staked his claim as a mainstay within the City starting XI and was commended for another impressive display.

With Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu another standout performer across the 90 minutes, BBC pundit Garth Crooks gave kudos to Laporte on his dependability in his team of the week selections.

''A lot was made of the performance by Mohammed Salisu against Manchester City but I've seen this lad play before and he can do something brilliant one minute and then something utterly reckless the next,'' began the 63-year-old.

''I tend to prefer defenders who are consistent, steady and generally reliable.

''Aymeric Laporte falls into that category and is capable of scoring the occasional goal when his team is in trouble.''

Despite surrendering their 12-game winning streak this weekend, Pep Guardiola's side are still in pole position to retain their domestic crown with just 15 games left to play.

With a much needed two-week break before a return to action against Fulham in the FA Cup, the Blues will be happy with their recent run over the Christmas and New Year period.

Also still involved in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, City will hope to go one better having fallen at the last hurdle against Chelsea in last season's all-English final.
