Man City's unseen impact on England squads shows academy plan is working

Barring injuries and a couple of exceptions, almost all of Manchester City's senior squad have jetted off on international duty this week, representing their countries in Nations League fixtures or friendly games.

It's a familiar reality for City, who have assembled a squad of world-class players, who are naturally among the best in their respective countries, meaning the Blues are well-represented whenever the international breaks come around. And the same can be said of the City academy, who have seen plenty of their Elite Development and under-18 squads also head out on international duty.

In fact, an impressive 28 City players are representing their countries at youth or senior level, with 18 of those picked by England between under-17 and under-21 level. It's an achievement that underlines a long-term plan at City to get a local core, supplemented by the best young talents from around the world.

Academy success story Phil Foden is most certainly City's best graduate from the CFA, and he looks set for a crucial role for England at the World Cup. Behind him, though, are an impressive number of Young Lions playing important roles for the England youth teams this week, with City understandably happy to have so many players report for international duty.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis is the under-21s captain, with him and Cole Palmer starting their win over Italy last week, with Tommy Doyle and Luke Mbete coming off the bench. James McAtee and James Trafford were also in Lee Carsley's squad, who faced Germany at Bramall Lane last night.
