Man City's Stefan Ortega transfer stance with Pep Guardiola facing transfer reality

Ederson's unexpected return from a nasty-looking shoulder injury gives Pep Guardiola an unfamiliar selection dilemma against Wolves on Saturday.

In the past, Ederson was always City's number one - and by some distance. The Brazilian rarely missed games and started all Premier League and Champions League games if fit. The second choice - whether it be Claudio Bravo, Zack Steffen or Aro Muric - would play in the domestic cups to keep them happy and to give them a handful of games should they be needed in an emergency. But Ederson always came back in. This season, that is no longer a guarantee.

He has had to be replaced three times in games this term with injury, and Stefan Ortega has replaced him seamlessly each time. When Ederson has needed a game or two to recover, Ortega has deputised with no fuss, to the point where he started at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid with Ederson available.

That was a landmark moment for the two goalkeepers, and came after Ortega had gone public with his revelation that he could leave this summer. There has previously been interest from Bayern Munich, but Ortega remained in Manchester and now could look for more regular football having proven himself.
