Man City's Etihad Stadium North Stand latest as progress update offered and landmark reached

Manchester City have hailed the landmark installation of the first steel beams at the Etihad Stadium as their North Stand expansion work picks up pace.

City fans attending the Etihad in recent weeks will have noticed the steel structure being installed behind the current two-tiered North Stand, rising high into the Manchester sky to show just how big the 7,000-seat expansion will be. Building work for the £300m project has been under way since the planning application was approved in July 2023, and now the club have marked the significant milestone of seeing the initial steel framework installed.

The expansion will see a third tier added to the Etihad's North Stand, taking capacity to more than 60,000 at the stadium and ensuring all four stands have three tiers. As well as the new seats, a 3,000-capacity fan zone will be built behind the stand, as well as a 400-bed hotel, a new club shop and museum. A stadium roof walk - similar to the one at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, will also encourage fans to attend the Etihad all year round.

Images released by City show the scale of the steel structure, and aerial pictures of the Etihad before the Real Madrid game on Wednesday also show the beginnings of the buildings that will house the hotel, club shop and fan zone. With the new Co-op Live arena opening this month, metres away from the North Stand, City bosses hope that the destination will become a 'world-class, year-round entertainment destination.'
