Man City's endless Erling Haaland debate took a new twist this week

After two goalless appearances at Nottingham Forest and RB Leipzig, Erling Haaland was the problem again. After his record-breaking strike at Bournemouth, he was Manchester City's solution.

This week has summed up the ridiculousness of the Haaland debate from outside City this season, and the Blues' return to winning ways should ease the criticism for another week or two. Haaland was guilty of missing a glorious chance at Forest, but Pep Guardiola admitted he was right to feel frustrated vs Leipzig as he only received one through ball all game.

So his improved service at Bournemouth which resulted in one goal to become City's top scorer in a single Premier League season was welcomed and helped significantly by the introduction of Julian Alvarez to the starting XI. Now, Alvarez might have proven that his best position lies alongside Haaland, rather than instead of him.

Guardiola hailed Alvarez for making Haaland play better, and City benefitted from having two strikers to stretch a compact defence rather than one. Alvarez has looked sharp when playing in the number 10 role behind Haaland, similar to where Kevin De Bruyne operates and he has more often been a replacement for the Belgian rather than for Haaland.

Alvarez was in the right place at the right time twice at Bournemouth to score and assist, combining with Haaland and doing what Guardiola has always wanted him to do: add another body in the box and give City's attackers more to aim for. In certain games, Alvarez has proven to be a better option than De Bruyne, which is a feat few could have predicted at the start of the season.
