Man City's Champions League task vs Borussia Dortmund may have just got harder

Manchester City's Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund was always going to feel like a big deal, a showpiece game even in the group stages.

But, following the postponement of last weekend's Premier League fixtures, there is likely to be an even bigger buzz for the return of the Blues. For one man in particular, Wednesday night is set to be a special occasion.

Erling Haaland enjoyed a successful two-and-a-half years in Dortmund, racking up a sensational 86 goals in 89 appearances for the Bundesliga team. That form earned him his dream move to City and it will likely be a surreal moment for him to line-up against his former teammates so soon after departing.

While Dortmund would already be keen to avoid their former man running riot against them in the Champions League, their need to escape a pummelling has just become greater after their weekend result. BVB were visibly humbled away at RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Goals from Will Orban, Dominik Szoboszlai and Amadou Haidara rounded off a routine 3-0 victory for the hosts against their title rivals. What makes this defeat perhaps more worrying than a similar result against Bayern Munich for instance, is the manner of it.

Dortmund failed to have a single shot on target against their opponents at the Red Bull Arena, who also happen to be managed by BVB's former boss Marco Rose. For Dortmund's current manager Edin Terzic it will have been embarrassing to see Rose get one over him in such convincing fashion.

No doubt, Terzic's message to his players ahead of Wednesday night's clash will be to avoid a similar defeat by any means necessary. This could pose a slightly tougher challenge for City than they were expecting.
