Man City's awkward Wolves clash compounded by centre back conundrum

With John Stones and Ruben Dias both out for the season, and Nathan Ake highly unlikely to make it for this game after suffering with a longstanding ankle problem, Pep Guardiola must feel like he is in a time warp. Two years ago City had similar issues after failing to replace Vincent Kompany and with Stones in a severe form slump, he had to turn to Fernandinho.

The Brazil midfielder, ever the consummate professional, did a good job as a stand-in but the Blues then missed his influence in midfield. That is not an issue this time, but having Fernandinho in the role at this stage of the season is not ideal, while Guardiola has also toyed with the idea of playing Rodri there and fielding the veteran in his more familiar holding role.

Now 37, Fernandinho again showed what he is about with an impressive second half in the 5-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday — and he will relish playing an important role in his final season with the Blues.
