Man City qualify for Champions League knockout stages despite FC Copenhagen draw

Manchester City have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League despite their stalemate with FC Copenhagen after Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla also drew in Germany.

The Blues knew before kick-off in Denmark that they would qualify for the last-16 if they won. However, having had a Rodri goal ruled out due to a handball by Riyad Mahrez and the latter then having a penalty saved it looked like it was not going to be City 's day.

It got even worse for Pep Guardiola's side when Sergio Gomez was handed a straight red card for the denial of a blatant goalscoring opportunity. In the second half, neither team was intent on attacking and a point was deemed a fair and good result for both.

Should City wish to qualify this evening they needed Borussia Dortmund to either win or draw against Sevilla. Tanguy Nianzou gave the Spanish side the lead in the 18th minute as they looked to keep their hopes of catching the Blues alive.

However, less than 20 minutes later Jude Bellingham netted an equaliser for Dortmund to put the Blues in a great position. Neither club could add further to the scoresheet so the draw has seen Guardiola's men through.

In two weeks City travel to Dortmund in their penultimate group stage clash. If they win at Signal Iduna Park they will secure top spot in Group G and the chance of an easier tie in the round of 16.
