Man City poised to dash Aston Villa transfer hopes as Pep Guardiola steps up interest

Man City are expected to step up their interest in Kalvin Phillips over the next few weeks, with the Leeds United midfielder still on the radar of both Aston Villa and West Ham. The 26-year-old has been a transfer target of Villa’s since 2019 and rejected the chance to sign for then-boss Dean Smith before helping Leeds to secure promotion in 2020.

Villa have signed midfield man Boubacar Kamara this summer, a player in a similar mould to Englishman Phillips but Villa are said to still hold an interest in the Leeds man with Gerrard intent on further improving the spine of his starting XI at Villa Park.

However, The Daily Telegraph has today outlined how Pep Guardiola will step up his pursuit of the talented No.6. City chiefs see Phillips as the perfect replacement for the outgoing Fernandinho, and view Philipps as a potential ball-playing centre-back. He’ll also add even more physicality to City’s ranks following their exciting capture of striker Erling Haaland from Dortmund for £67.5million.

As for Villa, Gerrard will now most-likely continue to look elsewhere to add competition to the likes of Kamara, John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson, while the latter could well be available for a transfer if a suitable offer is forthcoming.

Villa are set to confirm the £15million sale of Matt Targett this week after the full-back penned a four-year deal at Newcastle following his successful loan spell. Gerrard does, however, want a replacement to come in and rival Lucas Digne for a starting shirt. A new striker is also desired.
