Man City player ratings vs Aston Villa as Josko Gvardiol and Bernardo Silva poor
Ederson: City's best player, making a number of excellent saves and unfortunate to see the ball deflected past him for the goal. 7
Walker: Didn't win many duels all night as Watkins and McGinn applied an effective squeeze. 5
Akanji: Better than most carrying the ball and alert to cut out a number of dangerous situations. 7
Dias: Unfortunate with the deflection and did a reasonable job of fire-fighting, even if he couldn't turn the momentum. 6
Gvardiol: A rough night up against Bailey where he was beaten more often than not by the tricky winger. 4
Stones: Centre-back, right-back, holding midfield or secondary striker. A few signs of rustiness but City are a better team with him in it. 6
Lewis: Struggled to keep the ball as Villa swarmed all over him whenever he was in possession. Improved in the second half. 5
Alvarez: Couldn't offer anything in attack and was unable to stop Villa running through the team in midfield. 5
Foden: Played in Haaland early on and showed more than any other forward before another early sub. 6
Silva: One of his worst performances for a while, needlessly giving the ball away and making poor decisions to put City under pressure. 4
Haaland: Two early chances that were well saved by Martinez. Worked hard defensively but otherwise struggled to be on the same wavelength as Foden. 6
Kovacic (for Lewis, 68) Unable to make any meaningful impression. 6
Nunes (for Alvarez, 68) Got the ball in the Villa box and a needless backheel squandered the chance. 5
Bobb (for Foden, 73) Up to speed with the game and gave a decent performance. 6
