Man City: Pep Guardiola overcome with emotion after beating Liverpool to Premier League title

Pep Guardiola was overcome with emotion as the final whistle of Manchester City 3-2 Aston Villa sounded at the Etihad Stadium.

In one of the most dramatic climaxes to a Premier League season in history, the Citizens looked to have bottled their chance at a fourth title in five years when they went 2-0 down against the Villans.

Liverpool fans were rubbing their hands together at the prospect of Steven Gerrard doing them a favour as Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho both found the net against the reigning champions.

However, remarkably, Liverpool never actually leapfrogged into first place as Wolverhampton Wanderers held them at 1-1 until the closing moments when Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson scored.

And that wasn’t enough for the Merseysiders to wrestle the title back from City’s hands because their north-west rivals just happened to produce a stunning comeback at the Etihad.

In scenes not too dissimilar to that of the iconic Sergio Aguero goal, albeit on not quite such a dramatic scale, there were absolute limbs at City as they scored three goals in just five minutes.

Ilkay Gundogan found the net either side of a Rodri strike to spark scenes of delirium in sky blue, meaning that only a late goal from Villa could possibly see the English footballing crown end up elsewhere.

So, when the final whistle ended any hope of Gerrard saving Liverpool in the dying seconds, all the emotion flooded out for Guardiola as he breathed in his fourth Premier League title on the sidelines.

In the first few seconds after full-time, the 51-year-old could be seen wildly celebrated as if he’d scored a goal, but quickly the gravity of the situation quickly took hold as tears of happiness formed in his eyes.
