Eight Manchester United players lost their lives as the plane bringing them home from a European Cup tie in Belgrade crashed.. Also among the victims was former Manchester City goalkeeper Frank Swift, then working as a journalist for the News of the World.

City's Chief Operations Officer Omar Berrada, Chief Communications Officer Simon Heggie and Managing Director Danny Wilson all attended the memorial along with a number of City supporters.

They laid a blue and white City scarf next to a United scarf at the foot of a memorial as a mark of respect. The memorial inscribed with the names of the victims was erected at the site of the tragedy by United in 2004 and in 2008, on the 50th anniversary, the Munich City Council renamed the site Manchesterplatz.
