Man City home shirt breaks club records after Real Madrid quirk

Manchester City sold a shirt every 12 seconds on the day that their new home kit came out to set a new club record.

The 2023/24 home kit smashed the previous best set by the 22/23 retro-inspired home shirt, with sales up 58 per cent on the opening day compared to last year. There was also a three-day record from Friday to Sunday, up 44 per cent on last year.

It capped a strong week for the retail team that saw three new highs for the City Store at the stadium. The day of the kit launch was the highest day of trade ever for the club as fans rushed to buy the new shirt, and Sunday's match against Chelsea set a new best for a matchday in the store as more supporters got their hands on the kit.

That matchday high had only just been set by Wednesday's game against Real Madrid, surpassing any previous games. That achievement was even more remarkable given the shop was out of home kits as the club were getting ready for the 23/24 versions to be in place for Friday.

City wore the new home shirt on Sunday at Brentford for the first time, but will not be using it for their two remaining matches. Pep Guardiola's side will be in blue against both United and Inter, but will revert to this season's kit for those occasions.

The club are celebrating a record year for retail this season, with every Premier League game sold out and demand for tickets greater than ever thanks in no small part to the signing of superstar Erling Haaland last summer. His arrival has seen the club make gains in Scandinavia and the US, while a special kit designed to celebrate Chinese New Year sold out rapidly in China.
