Man City hero Erling Haaland breaks goals record held by Manchester United and Liverpool stars

Erling Haaland has become the first Premier League player to score 45 goals in a single season across all competitions.

The striker found the net in the second half of Tuesday’s 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Bayern Munich to set yet another record. Haaland has netted 11 goals in just seven Champions League games this season after firing five past RB Leipzig in the last round.

He is now in pole position to become the top scorer in this season’s competition and also leads the race for the Premier League golden boot. The Norway sensation is on 30 league goals and just needs five more to claim the single-season league record.

His 45th goal of the campaign means he has dismantled a record previously held by Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah and former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who both scored 44 in the 2017/18 and 2002/03 seasons, respectively.

Haaland’s 45 goals come within 39 games this season with possibly another 15 games to go, should City go the distance in the Champions League and FA Cup this season with nine Premier League games left to play.

Sheffield United await in the FA Cup semi-finals with either United or Brighton to face in the final itself. Meanwhile, City will face the winners of Real Madrid against Chelsea should they see off Bayern.

If the Blues reach Istanbul for the final, they will come up against either Napoli, AC Milan, Inter Milan or Benfica. Inter beat Benfica 2-0 away from home in Tuesday night’s other quarter-final first leg.
