Man City have major Julian Alvarez headache going into next season

Most eyes will turn from the Premier League to the European Championship this summer for a football fix.

However, two other tournaments are important to Manchester City and both of them relate to Julian Alvarez. While most of the squad will be in Germany, Alvarez is one of a few who will be in the United States for the Copa America.

That may well be a short hop from where Pep Guardiola will be taking his squad in July for the pre-season tour, and Argentina will be playing between June 20 and July 14. Argentina will look to go deep into a competition where they are reigning champions, so chances of a rest are slim.

Then, while everyone else involved on international duty is taking a breather, Alvarez is set to hotfoot it to Paris for the Olympic Games. The 24-year-old can be included as an overage player in the Under-23s squad and City will not stop him from linking up for the chance to win gold.

The group stage will be completed by July 30, with the three knockout rounds coming on August 2, August 5, and August 8/9. Meanwhile, City will line up in London for the Community Shield against United on August 10 with the Premier League starting up again the following week.

Guardiola likes his players to have at least three weeks off over the summer, happy to start the season with his team underprepared rather than have them overworked from the very first day. A double-up of Copa America and Olympics would give no time for rest though, meaning that Alvarez would have to sit out the first three weeks of City's season instead.
