Man City goalkeeper Ederson withdraws from Brazil squad amid reports of illness

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has withdrawn from the Brazil squad for their World Cup qualifiers this month.

The popular goalkeeper had been included in Brazil's squad for their final scheduled qualifiers vs Chile and Bolivia. Brazil have already secured qualification for Qatar 2022 and can ensure they top the South American qualification standings with victory in their two fixtures in the next week.

However, Ederson won't play in the two games and will return to City after Brazil confirmed that goalkeeper Everson will replace him. Reports in Brazil suggest Ederson reported to the national team with illness, so the decision was taken to withdraw him from the squad.

He joins Gabriel Jesus, who was not selected in the initial squad, as well as Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne in City players who won't join their countries this week.

The Brazilian FA said: "The rest of the group arrives in Teresopolis this Tuesday, with the exception of goalkeeper Everson, summoned to replace fellow position Ederson. The Atletico-MG player joins the Brazilian team in Rio de Janeiro, on Wednesday."

Brazil still have one outstanding match to play - a showdown with second-placed Argentina that was abandoned last year and must be rearranged.

Walker was omitted from the England squad as Gareth Southgate wanted to assess his other right-back options - and he was overlooked for a second time when Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James withdrew with injury. De Bruyne was rested by Belgium, who are using this month to try players with under 50 caps.
