Man City given exciting glimpse into new signing as wonder goal sparks Sergio Aguero comparison

If you're going to score your first professional goal, it may as well be a good one.

When new Manchester City signing Claudio Echeverri picked up the ball outside the area for River Plate on Monday, he had plenty to do. But a drop of the shoulder took him past one defender and into the box, before a turn of pace took him towards the byline and past another. Then came the fierce shot from a tight angle into the roof of the net, and the celebration in the opposite direction.

If Sergio Aguero scored that goal, it would go down as a classic of the genre he perfected - the near post strike high into the roof of the net. Aguero watched Echeverri's first goal for River and re-posted it on X with a sunglasses emoji, endorsing the finish. City fans will be encouraged that he could start doing what Julian Alvarez did while back on loan at River - scoring goals and impacting games.

18-year-old midfielder Echeverri signed for City in January for an initial £12.5m with add-ons. He was loaned back to River for a year, similar to the deal that saw Alvarez sign from River in January 2022 before spending six months back in Argentina.

Echeverri angered River fans when the deal to City was in the works, confirming his intention not to sign a new contract in an interview in favour of signing for the Blues. He has not conducted an interview since, but spoke to reporters after his goal in River's Copa de la Liga comeback win over Gimnasia overnight.
