Man City get Rodri injury boost as 23 players train before FC Copenhagen in Champions League

Rodri was part of Manchester City training ahead of the Champions League clash with FC Copenhagen, but Kyle Walker was not.

Pep Guardiola had effectively ruled Walker out when giving a team news update earlier on Tuesday, but said Rodri would be assessed to see if he could train. And Rodri gave City a boost by being available for training, with just three first-team players missing from the session, including longer-term injury concerns John Stones and Kalvin Phillips.

Rodri suffered a calf problem the day before City faced Manchester United on Sunday, ruling him out of the derby, so his presence on Tuesday suggests that wasn't too serious, while Walker hobbled out of that game in the first half. Stones has a hamstring issue, while Phillips is recovering from shoulder surgery.

With Walker out, Guardiola had a squad of 23 players training at the City Football Academy ahead of the visit of Copenhagen, knowing three points would put them on the edge of qualification to the Champions League last-16 with three games remaining.

There were also inclusions in the training squad for youngsters Ben Knight, Alex Robertson, Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Rico Lewis.

Guardiola said earlier on Tuesday: "We will train this afternoon [Tuesday] and know exactly if Rodri feels better. I think Kyle is out but we wait for the training session.

On Phillips' progress, he said there is still a chance the midfielder could feature at the World Cup for England, saying: "I hope so for him and for his hopes to go with the national team but I'm not a doctor. In the summer I will take a license as a doctor."
