Man City get injury boost but Joao Cancelo left out of Super Cup squad

Joao Cancelo has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Super Cup with his future at the club looking even bleaker.

Pep Guardiola has named just 22 players in the group to travel to Athens to face Sevilla - one short of the maximum number allowed on the bench for the match. Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne are both absent, Dias with the concussion picked up in training last week and De Bruyne with the hamstring problem that reoccurred in the Premier League win over Burnley.

Despite no injury to Cancelo, the Portugal international has again been omitted from the squad. Having left on loan to join Bayern Munich in January after falling out with the manager, he was included again on the pre-season tour but does not look to have a future at the Etihad; Barcelona are one of the clubs interested in signing him.

City are boosted by the news that John Stones is fit enough to make the squad. He missed the Burnley game with a hip problem but Guardiola said the problem was very slight. Even if he is not fit to start against Sevilla, it increases his chances of being involved against Newcastle at the weekend.

James McAtee and Oscar Bobb are also included in the squad after impressing with their opportunities in pre-season. McAtee came off the bench at Burnley but is one of the youngsters at the club whose future remains unresolved with three weeks of the transfer window remaining.

CITY SQUAD: Ederson, Ortega, Carson, Walker, Lewis, Akanji, Ake, Laporte, Stones, Gvardiol, Gomez, Rodri, Phillips, Perrone, McAtee, Silva, Foden, Palmer, Bobb, Grealish, Alvarez, Haaland
