Man City fans call on club to support Hillsborough disaster initiatives after tribute shame

A group of Manchester City fans have written to the club's CEO Ferran Soriano to ask that the club support two Hillsborough disaster-related initiatives.

MCFC Fans Foodbank Support, a group of supporters who collect food donations at home games to help Mancunians in need, have requested that the club officially support the Real Truth Legacy Project and a Hillsborough Law. The former is a campaign to get education about the Hillsborough disaster - in which 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in 1989 - added to the national curriculum, while the latter is aimed at introducing a statutory duty of candour on public servants during all forms of public inquiry and criminal investigation.

The move comes after a minority of City supporters disrupted the minute's silence in tribute to the victims of the disaster, held before Saturday's FA Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool at Wembley. In a letter addressed to City CEO Ferran Soriano, MCFCFFS said: "Manchester City can join Liverpool FC, Everton FC and other clubs in their calls to ensure that the legacy of Hillsborough is not forgotten, and that the lies which caused so much pain to families cannot be repeated.

"The rivalry on the pitch with Liverpool has never been stronger than it is right now. Off the pitch however, it should be a different story. Despite calls for a rivalry defined by hatred and aggression in certain sections of the media, there is so much more to be achieved through mutual respect, understanding and friendship."
