Man City defender Kyle Walker details Gareth Southgate chat that came with England 'guarantee'

Kyle Walker has opened up on a private chat between himself and England manager Gareth Southgate after the Manchester City defender was omitted from the latest Three Lions squad. Walker sat out the clashes with Switzerland and the Ivory Coast due to a mutual agreement with Southgate.

An important member of the England team that reached the Euro 2020 showpiece last summer, Walker was thrust straight back into a charge for silverware at the Etihad Stadium this season. Ultimately, the 31-year-old was afforded no rest time on the back of that defeat against Italy.

As such, Southgate and Walker spoke about their plans moving forward and the City right-back is itching to claim back his place in June when England turn their attention to the Nations League. Of course, beyond that, the World Cup in Qatar is looming.

During a guest appearance on The Friday Football Special on BBC 5 Live Sport, the England defender said: "The manager had a chat with me and I do want to keep that personal because that was between me and him. He said take the rest and he wanted to have a look at a few of the other lads.

"He said that I will be back in the team come the summer for the Nations League. That fell well with me and felt as though I could get a little bit of a rest in. I came straight back from the Euros playing at the start of this season and I've played quite a few games.

"It also felt that it's time for other players to step up and get a little bit of a chance. Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Reece James both unfortunately pulled out, but the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters have stepped up and I thought he did tremendously well in both games."
