Man City decision to sell two players prompts questions from rival fans despite Erling Haaland coup

After a decade of not selling to a domestic rival, Manchester City have sold three in one summer.

For years the Blues have avoided losing players to Premier League clubs as they have made their way to the summit of English football. Not only have the club not wanted to suffer at the hands of a former player in matches but they haven't wanted the attention and debate that would have come with how someone they let go is doing; United were blocked from signing an unhappy Jadon Sancho in 2017, while as recently as this January Barcelona's move for Ferran Torres was only allowed because the Catalan club had already been knocked out of the Champions League.

This year, feast has followed famine: Raheem Sterling has been sold to Chelsea for £47.5m while Arsenal have spent a combined £75m to tempt Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko away. That is in part a reflection of the financial advantage Premier League clubs have in compared to their European counterparts, yet City would not have sold if they hadn't felt comfortable enough with their current squad and replacements.

The jury remains firmly out though. Asked to name the best transfers so far of the window in the Sky Bet Fan Hope Survey, two in every five people ranked Sterling's move to Chelsea as the best. That is more than any other deal, pipping City's sensational capture of Erling Haaland into second place on 39 per cent.
