Man City confirm Super Cup squad as Txiki Begiristain backs new academy director

Super Cup squad

Joao Cancelo has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Super Cup with his future at the club looking even bleaker.

Pep Guardiola has named just 22 players in the group to travel to Athens to face Sevilla - one short of the maximum number allowed on the bench for the match. Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne are both absent, Dias with the concussion picked up in training last week and De Bruyne with the hamstring problem that reoccurred in the Premier League win over Burnley.

Despite no injury to Cancelo, the Portugal international has again been omitted from the squad. Having left on loan to join Bayern Munich in January after falling out with the manager, he was included again on the pre-season tour but does not look to have a future at the Etihad; Barcelona are one of the clubs interested in signing him.

New academy director

Manchester City's new academy director has been backed by Txiki Begiristain to build on the recent success at the club.

Thomas Krucken, 46, has taken up the top job in the academy - replacing Jason Wilcox, who left to join Southampton, and arrives with more than two decades of experience in youth coaching - including the 2000/01 season with the Blues when he was in his early 20s. Krucken has joined from VfB Stuttgart, where he has been head of youth development since 2019.
