Man City and Arsenal reactions to Community Shield show why Blues remain title favourites

Mikel Arteta celebrated Arsenal's 101st-minute equaliser like it won them the title. Arsenal's players celebrated their subsequent penalty shoot-out win with their fans, who were delighted to win a trophy at Wembley. Manchester City players quietly consoled each other, waited to watch Arsenal lift the Community Shield, and quietly walked down the tunnel.

Even before the game, both managers used their programme notes to justify Arsenal's presence in a game contested by the Premier League and FA Cup winners. City had won both, showing off their treble collection pre-match, with Arsenal having nothing to show for last season.

Pep Guardiola wrote: "The reason Arsenal are here today is because they did so well last season. They pushed us so hard." Arteta said: “This is a match which recognises two clubs who had a good year." If Arsenal's second place constituted a good year, what do City call their achievements?

After the game, Guardiola knew there was no point dwelling on the Community Shield defeat. "The reason we lost three Community Shields is because we won three Premier Leagues." That remains the biggest trophy on offer for City, and their reaction on Sunday shows why they have dominated the league under Guardiola.

Aaron Ramsdale was the first Arsenal player to go and shake hands with the City squad after the shoot-out, but had celebrated wildly after saving Rodri's penalty and watching Kevin De Bruyne's shot blast off his crossbar. Ramsdale then told the TV cameras that Arsenal had overcome a mental block to City after eight successive defeats in head-to-head matches. Or at least they can win a penalty shoot-out
