Man City 4-3 Real Madrid highlights and reaction as Benzema brace opens up Champions League tie

Manchester City and Real Madrid played out a sensational night of Champions League football at the Etihad on Tuesday night.

In a madcap game in Manchester, City and Real exchanged blows, after Pep Guardiola's side had stormed into an early 2-0 lead through Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus. Guardiola had picked John Stones at right-back amid a defensive injury crisis, only for Stones to come off injured before half-time, to be replaced by Fernandinho.

By that stage, Karim Benzema had reduced the deficit to 2-1, but Phil Foden nodded home after the break to restore City's two-goal lead — before a Vinicius Junior goal from a counter-attack made it 3-2.

Bernardo Silva then smashed home to give City a deserved 4-2 lead. They were the superior side all night and should have won by a bigger margin. But Benzema's dinked penalty made it 4-3 late on as the teams prepare to head to the Bernabeu for next week's second leg.
