Man City 1-0 Atletico Madrid: Diego Simeone's tactics were so defensive
Manchester City will take a slender 1-0 advantage to the Wanda Metropolitano next week.
Pep Guardiola’s side were made to work incredibly hard against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, but eventually got the job done in the second half.
A brilliant goal from Kevin De Bruyne – which was expertly created by Phil Foden just 80 seconds after coming on – was enough for a victory that means City now have one foot in the semi-finals.
Of course, a lot can change during the 90 minutes in Madrid, especially when you remember how many top-quality players Atletico possess.
However, if the Spanish champions are to turn things around on their home patch, they’ll have to play a completely different game.
At the Etihad Stadium, Atletico’s tactics were so defensive it’s actually impressive. For much of the game, they were sat in a 5-5-0 formation while City players had the ball, a tactic that frustrated the hosts for quite some time.
