A woman was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. She has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

In a statement, North Yorkshire Police appealed for witnesses. "There were a number of people at the venue at the time of the incident who officers would like to come forward," the force said.

At 1,732ft above sea level Tan Hill Inn, in Langthwaite, Richmond, is said to be the highest pub in Great Britain. The 17th century inn has appeared in TV adverts and series such as Top Gear, The Fast Show and All Creatures Great and Small and hosted gigs by the likes of British Sea Power.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 01609 643147 or Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 quoting reference 12230136112.
